Stretch Mark Prevention
Stretch marks are the result of rapid stretching of the skin due to rapid growth that occurs during puberty and because of the weight gained during pregnancy. The stretch marks are the scars that are formed when the epidermis and dermis are torn from the skin being stretched. Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the resilient middle layer that helps the skin retain its shape. No stretch marks will form as long as there is support within the dermis.
Stretch marks first appear as red and purple lines. Over time they will gradually fade and turn a lighter color but they will never completely disappear on their own. Stretch marks can occur anywhere on your body. They are more likely to appear where larger amounts of fat are stored, such as the abdomen, the breasts, the inner and outer thighs, the hips and the buttocks.
There have been studies conducted to see how certain types of creams work in the prevention and reduction of stretch marks. This study found a daily application of a cream called Trofolastin, which contained centella asiatica extract, vitamin E, and collagen-elastin hydrolysates, actually caused fewer stretch marks to appear during pregnancy. Another study, though lacking a placebo control, examined a cream called Verum which contained vitamin E, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, elastin and menthol. It was associated with fewer stretch marks during pregnancy versus no treatment.
Once formed, there are several treatments for improving the appearance of stretch marks. These include Laser Treatments, Dermabrasion and prescription retinoids. Since these treatments can be expensive, it is definetly worth the daily use of creams to help prevent as many stretch marks as possible.
