Baby Monitors
A Baby Monitor is a simple transmitter and receiver system that allows you to hear noises your child makes when you are not in the same room. The microphone is placed near the baby and the receiver is carried by the parent or caregiver.

Some Baby Monitors allow you to not only hear your baby, but also communicate back like a walkie-talkie. Doctors and other medical professionals do not recommend the use of Baby Monitors as a tool to prevent SIDS. The monitor can give you a false sense of security. Nothing should take the place of you physically going and checking on your baby at regular intervals.
Some Baby Monitors also have a digital camera which shows video footage of your baby similar to that of a web cam. The receiver can either be plugged into a television or used with a battery operated portable LCD screen. This type of Baby Monitor is called a Baby Cam. They can work in low light levels during night mode so you can see your baby at night.
The newest technology in Baby Monitors is a movement sensor. The transmitter is usually a pressure-sensitive mat that is placed underneath the baby's mattress. It picks up the slight movement of your baby's breathing which can warn you of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) when it stops feeling any movement at all.
I don't know how mommies got along without a Baby Monitor. I highly suggest you have one ready to use when your baby comes home from the hospital. It will allow you to actually get a shower, do laundry or any other household chore that keeps you from hearing your baby while he or she is in the crib.
